We are descendants of the Norley branch of the Chrimes’ family which can be traced back to John Chrimes circa 1730. The history of the name is explained in great detail by David Chrimes, again of Norley. He has an excellent web site which  can be found at: Link to David’s site

Our great great Grandfather Samuel Chrimes [A0078] (Born 1810) was a schoolmaster in Norley, his son, also Samuel [A0076] (born in 1841), was a Grocer at a shop in Cow Lane. My grandfather Albert [A0011] , pictured right, was an assistant grocer there in 1911. As far as we can work out, Samuel the younger married  Mary Yearsley [A0077], who’s father Robert was running the shop at the time. Samuel later married Sarah Jane Bebbington [A0075]who was previously a servant in the household.

Albert married Annie Holland [A0015]of Acton Bridge. They had four children, one of their sons, Alan [A0001], married our Mother, Dorrie Joan Davies [A0002] in 1946. So the grocers shop seems to have been “inherited” from the Yearsley family. Dad’s brother Merrick [A0007]was a baker and he lived with his wife Alice [A0016] and the family in Cow Lane. I remember they had a fine house with splendid topiary around the garden.

We never met Grandad Albert but I do recall Granny Chrimes living in a bungalow in Cow Lane. Dad was in the RAF during the second world war, he was an aircraft engineer, and spent some time in South Africa.Dad had another brother called Norman and a sister called Edna. I assume that his parents wanted him to carry on with the family grocery business, but Dad preferred to get his hands dirty and he ran the local garage in Cow Lane. As well as car repairs I believe there were also petrol pumps.

Dad married Mum shortly after the war in 1946. Ian was born in 1949 and lived in Cow Lane until about 1957, Sue was born in 1956. The family moved to a new bungalow in Norley Road in

Cuddington, in 1957. Quite a few of the Chrimes’ travelled far and wide. Ernest Chrimes (1882-1953)a great uncle of mine is recorded as traveling back from Australia in 1924 and 1927, but up to now I have been unable to find when he first emigrated there.
